Overview
Heredad Segura Viudas sits just outside Barcelona, surrounded by the sun‑drenched vineyards of historic Penedès. With origins dating back to the 12th century, the estate has evolved from a medieval stronghold into one of Spain’s most respected Cava producers. Since becoming a winery in 1959, Segura Viudas has earned acclaim for its traditional‑method craftsmanship and dedication to creating elegant, artisan sparkling wines.
Heritage
The Segura Viudas estate land has nurtured vineyards for more than 800 years. A deed from 1156 names the estate Domus de Reÿm—“The House of Grapes.” Today, premium wines crafted from indigenous grape varietals carry an authentic character, showcasing generations of craftsmanship and maintaining a deep connection to these historic roots.
Winemaking
D.O. Penedès stretches between the Montserrat ranges and the Mediterranean coast, offering an ideal climate for cultivating grapes. Indigenous varietals—Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Parellada—form the foundation of Segura Viudas cavas. Respect for the Environment
At Segura Viudas, daily efforts focus on minimizing environmental impact. Since 1999, an environmental management system aligned with ISO 14001 has guided this commitment. The system identifies key environmental aspects—water, energy, and waste consumption—and establishes annual reduction targets to ensure continuous improvement. Segura Viudas is Wineries for Climate Protection (WFCP) certified.
Biodiversity & Sustainable Viticulture
An extensive biodiversity inventory has identified hundreds of species thriving among the vineyards, a richness protected and promoted through wine tourism. Sustainable viticulture—rooted in productive, social, and economic balance—guides vineyard practices. Segura Viudas has obtained the “Biosphere Commitment” certificate in recognition of its dedication to sustainable, high‑quality tourism.
